About This Exhibit
(Titled "Chapter Four")
Once again I've made multiple references to the
last line of Psalm 23 by implying various elements of a
house - doors, windows, floor plans, rooftops, etc. These
pieces are all titled as page numbers because the page
numbers will eventually be replaced by actual pages of text
from an upcoming novel.
The image on the left side of each web page is a detail (photo)
of the "core" piece. I use the term "core" because in most
of my recent work I first create a smaller, central piece that is
then incorporated into a larger piece. Since I always make
twenty-three pieces per group, I must actually make forty-six
total art pieces in order to complete a group. This pairing of twenty-three with another twenty-three is analogous to the
pairing of chromosomes in the creation of a human being.
The final pieces, consisting of the smaller core pieces and their
larger outer pieces, stand on the floor with their backs to the wall - also analogous to human beings.
The core pieces are wood and oil paint and clear glass
beads. As the viewer walks by each piece, the beads
appear to luminesce, as if lit by a thousand tiny light bulbs, turning to a brilliant cast of changing fluorescent colors.
The light banks, the images on the right side of each web
page, are the main pieces. They are designs that incorporate fluorescent fixtures behind white acrylic diffusers, often
covered by black acrylic masks, and framed with aluminum
moulding.
